Initial Planning

Initial Planning

As group, we wanted to create an experience or product that bettered the mental health of others and we all had the common interest of games.

Game

Our initial direction was making a 'cozy' game as a means to help with stress. We focused on conducting quantitative surveys to determine what made people feel less stressed, and we started initial concept testing for a game using a sketched paper prototype.

Discovery and Pivot

Discovery and Pivot

Our initial focus was on creating a game as a solution, but no strong connection was discovered between games and stress relief. It became evident that being completely focused on creating game was limiting our solutions.

We still wanted to focus on mental health and narrowed our focus to a specific area of mental health: Dialectical Behavior Therapy or "DBT."

After conducting additional interviews with mental health practitioners and we learned that physical items are more effective in promoting a peaceful state in emergency situations.

REVISED Problem Statement:

How might we effectively reinforce the use of DBT skills for clients in moments of crisis as a companion tool for therapists?

Next Steps

The final design and prototypes resonated with those that we tested. Here are the steps that we would use to take the product to the next level:

1

Create a working web prototype of the digital product

2

Gather feedback from mental health practitioners with an expertise in practicing DBT

3

Iterate on the physical products to create higher fidelity prototypes

Conclusion

Conclusion

Within the 10 weeks of the project, the team was able to produce a final deliverable with both physical items and a digital component, despite the challenge of losing three weeks worth of work, and having to pivot mid-way through the project.

Our path to our final design solution was not a linear one, but instead filled with many hurdles that we worked together to overcome!
